When Sarah decided to take a long-awaited holiday, she felt a mix of excitement and worry. Leaving behind her beloved dog, Max, was tough. She wanted to ensure he was safe and happy while she was away. After a bit of research, she discovered that finding a great pet sitter could be the solution to her dilemma. But how does one go about choosing the right person for such an important job?Choosing a pet sitter is more than just finding someone who can drop by to feed your pet. It’s about finding someone who understands your pet’s needs, respects your home, and can provide companionship in your absence. According to a survey by the American Pet Products Association, 67% of Australian households own a pet, which means many people are in the same boat as Sarah. With so many options available, how do you narrow it down?

What to Look for in a Pet Sitter

First, consider experience. A good pet sitter should have a solid background in caring for animals. Look for someone who has references and positive reviews from previous clients. Websites like PetCloud can be great resources for finding trusted sitters with verified backgrounds.

Secondly, think about the specific needs of your pet. Does your dog require medication? Is your cat shy and need extra attention? Make sure the sitter is comfortable with your pet’s unique requirements. It’s always a good idea to have a meet-and-greet before making a decision. This way, you can see how your pet reacts to the sitter and gauge their compatibility.

Questions to Ask Potential Pet Sitters

When interviewing potential sitters, here are five important questions to consider:

  • What experience do you have with pets? Look for specific examples that relate to your pet’s needs.
  • Are you insured? This protects both you and the sitter in case of accidents.
  • Can you provide references? A reputable sitter should have no problem giving you contacts of satisfied clients.
  • What is your policy for emergencies? Understanding their plan will give you peace of mind.
  • How do you handle daily updates? Knowing how and when they will communicate can ease your worries while you’re away.

Understanding Costs

Another factor to consider is cost. Pet sitting rates can vary widely based on location, the sitter’s experience, and the services offered. According to a survey by Pet Sitters International, the average cost for pet sitting in Australia ranges from $25 to $50 per visit. It’s essential to balance cost with the level of care your pet will receive.

Unique Insights

While many websites focus on the basics, one unique aspect to consider is the sitter’s ability to provide companionship. Pets can experience anxiety when their owners are away. A great pet sitter will not only take care of feeding and walking but will also engage your pet in play and provide comfort. Look for sitters who offer enrichment activities, as these can significantly reduce stress for your pet.

Summary of Key Points

Choosing a great pet sitter involves knowing what to look for, asking the right questions, understanding costs, and considering your pet’s emotional needs. By taking the time to find the right fit, you can enjoy your holiday knowing that your pet is in good hands.

As you think about your next holiday, consider how important it is to find someone who will treat your pet with love and care. Who will you trust to look after your best friend while you’re away?

PetCloud is a platform that connects pet owners with reliable pet sitters, ensuring peace of mind while you’re away. With a variety of services available, from pet sitting to dog walking, you can find the perfect match for your pet’s needs.

If you have never owned a dog or cat, or even if you do, but have never taken care of another person’s pet, it can feel daunting. Here are a few do’s and don’ts to be aware of before you accept your first pet sitting job.

DO always have a Meet & Greet with the Pet Owner in person to do a full property tour to share joint legal responsibility that it is escape-proof and hazard-free with a Property checklist and that pets are compatible.

DO always sanitise and disinfect your hands or wounds after interacting with pets to prevent catching a zoonosis.

DO take time to ask the Pet Owner about the medical history and the behavioural history of the pet – ie. whether it is a rescue, or has a history of aggression, resource guarding, or escapism.

DO ask whether pets are microchipped, and ensure pets are wearing collars with ID tags and leashes before being dropped off. Also check if they are desexed, and vaccinated.

DO have $10M Public Liability insurance to cover big Vet Bills in the event of an unforeseen Pet Accident. If you join PetCloud as a Pet Sitter, PetCloud has a policy in place to cover bookings so you don’t have to pay for the cost of this.

DO have savlon antiseptic cream and fabric band aids on hand to disinfect pet wounds or hot spots before they get worse. Report it as early as possible to the Pet Owner and take a photo and ask if they would like you to take their pet to the Vet.

DO always ensure the Pet Owner pays up front via PetCloud before the booking begins. Do not start a booking or accept pets for drop off without payment being confirmed.  They could have insufficient funds & it saves you from being ripped off.

DO call your nearest Emergency Vet as your first course of action if there is a medical emergency (and then report it to PetCloud).

DO always give daily photo updates & report changes in stool or behaviour to the Pet Owner

DO always keep Cats and Kittens securely locked indoors (with good air flow) 100% at all times & never allowed to roam outside – even if requested by the Pet Owner. A kitty litter tray must be provided indoors.

DO only ever walk a maximum of 3 dogs, and take on an appropriate size and temperament of dogs according to your strength

DO feed each dog at separate ends of the yard or house to avoid fights breaking out.

DO always pick up after guest dogs poop and never walk a female dog on heat. It’s illegal.

DO charge up your phone and ensure you are always contactable and responsive.

DO use your smartphone as your liability safeguard to film or photograph or make notes or get permission in writing.

DO realise your time is valuable, particularly to someone who has none, by not discounting your prices.

DO keep a diary. Being organised and reliable is key.

DO request the Owner provides their pet’s food and bedding to avoid stomach upsets and diarrhea.

DON’T spray poison insect spray (such as Mortein) around your home to get rid of insects or fleas. Only use a pet-friendly pesticide, because pets can absorb poison through their paws and die.

DON’T give guest pets extra treats or special foods against the owner’s instructions, even if you want to pamper them a little. The animal could have a strict diet or may be allergic or sensitive to food changes.

DON’T take pets anywhere that has not been discussed and approved with the Owner in writing.

DON’T ever accept bookings for cats while you are pregnant due to the risk of toxoplasmosis.

DON’T ever leave pets in the car, or tied up outside a shop. Pets can die in hot cars in minutes and can get stolen out the front of shops. Leave them at home if you have to visit the store.

DON’T ever let a dog off leash in a public area. It’s against the law. You must have control of a dog at all times.

DON’T ever take a dog to the dog park as they are a hotspot for fights breaking out and PetCloud’s insurance won’t cover it.

DON’T ever walk dogs in the heat of the day due to burnt paws and heatstroke.

DON’T ever accept cash, doing this voids your insurance cover making you liable to pay up to $16,000 in event of a Vet emergency bill and will lead to my listing being permanently banned.

DON’T give animals any kind of medication, or adjust their existing medication, without the prior written permission of the owner or instruction of a vet.

DON’T ever smack or yell at a pet. Use positive reinforcement through reward based training.

  1. Regularly check fly Screens or grills to ensure they are free of holes or rips. Check that fly Screens or grills don’t have holes or rips, or have come away from their rubber backing. If so, replace them.
  1. Spaces between Bars on windows sills – ensure the spaces between the bars must be small enough that a pet cannot squeeze through or become trapped.
  1. Latches on Windows and Doors – Ensure latches on windows and doors are in working order –  Could the pet potentially wiggle them open?
  1. Ensure Windows up high can’t be accessed by nearby furniture to escape.
  1. Doors – Are there certain doors that must remain closed to keep the cat/kitten secure? Will children or other family members remember and reliably stick to these rules?
  1. Balcony bars are close enough together so visiting pets can’t fall.
  1. Chocolate, chewing gum, products with artificial sweeteners are out of reach
  1. Front loading Clothes Dryers/Washing Machines – ensure that pets don’t curl up in clothing through an open door and then the machine switched on unknowingly.
  1. Cleaning Products are out of reach
  1. Hotplates /Stoves /Ovens are supervised when in use
  1. Fish Tanks – is the Fish tank away from nearby lounges or benches that can be jumped up on to get to the fish tank?
  1. Cables – Check that electrical extension cables aren’t being chewed on
  1. Candles – ensure candles are supervised at all times. Blow them out when not in use
  1. Curtain cords – ensure bored pets don’t swing from them and strangle themselves
  1. Christmas Tree lights and decorations – ensure bored pets don’t chew them or swing from them
  1.  Ventilation – If the house is relying on doors and windows to be closed to keep the cat/kitten secure, will the room be too hot/stuffy in summer?

Is this list everything I need to check for?

Each pet minding situation needs to be individually assessed because what qualifies as adequate security for one pet may not be for another.  These are some common safety hazards. Be alert for other hazards that are not listed here.

So who is responsible for ensuring a Sitter’s property is escape proof and hazard free?

The RSPCA says both pet owners and pet minders should appraise the property for the pet being minded; together, they are more likely to identify all potential escape routes and hazards and find acceptable solutions.

This month we are highlight Stephanie who despite only being with PetCloud for 3 months, is making a big impression on her clients who enjoy her loving and positive nature.

Stephanie has always had a passion for animals from a young age. She grew up owning pets and loved every minute of it. Now Stephanie has 2 dogs and a cat which she love dearly and treats them as though they are her babies.

One day she decided to look more into becoming a pet sitter and found PetCloud. Straight away she knew this was for her! Stephanie is currently a science student at La Trobe University and is wokring towards become a professional in the pet industry as a veterinarian.

I’ve been with PetCloud for:  3 ½ months
Occupation: pet sitter and full time student
Services I offer:  Minding at my home (overnight or daycare), walking, house visits, pet taxui and visits to vets.

How do you make owners and their pets feel special?

During meet and greets, I always greet owners and their pets with a smile on my face knowing that this could potentially be another client and just seeing an animal gives me a smile!

I give tours of my home and backyard during these meet and greets and talk about funny situations I have encountered with my pets and other pets I take care of.  My home is clean and is a calm environment which helps the new pet settle in and relaxes them as my home is a new environment to them.

During the warmer months, the pets stay in my home as it is quite cool in there and have the fan on and they actually sit in front of it to cool down – so cute!

I treat them as the same I treat my own pets – play with them, give them cuddles, we take lots of selfies and we eat dinner together! I send photos and videos regularly to pet owners to update them on their pet.

Dog Walks and coffee shop dates - become a Pet Sitter in Melbourne with PetCloud

What do you find rewarding about being a pet sitter?

I enjoy watching the new pets have fun in a new environment. They are such good therapy and provide a stress free environment. It gives me relief knowing they are having fun and are happy being with a new family.

I loved all the reviews I have received recently as it has given me a boost of confidence and just knowing that they enjoyed my services makes me really happy.

Live in Melbourne and think Stephanie sounds like the perfect match for your pet?
Check our Stephanie’s profile or Book her services here.

Tell us a cute or funny story from your pet sitting journey

I had a puppy spoodle staying with me during Christmas time. He was such the cutest thing! He was such a well behaved dog.

One morning, I wake up in my bed with him right next to me. He had snuck in my room early in the morning and slept right next to me. He started licking my face and of course woke me up.

He then wiggled his way into the sheets – with his nose, he started moving the sheets ended up literally in bed with me. The funniest thing ever!!

What extra services do you offer?

I provide daily walking as an extra service. It is a very popular service as every dog that I have taken care of needs a walk.

This definitely increases income but more importantly I provide daily walking to clients as I know it is essential for dogs to get their exercise regularly and leads to a healthy life.

Share your top tips for getting your name out there and growing your client base?

  • Make flyers/business cards and hand them out
  • Post an add on gumtree/facebook
  • Once you get your first client and your first review, it’ll definitely pick up from there and business will boom.

How did being an Accredited Pet Sitter help you stand out from the pack?

I think just being yourself. Expressing your passion and love for animals is the one thing a pet owner really appreciates.

I felt as though I did not need to do it as I already have some knowledge about animal well-being and have adequate experience taking care of pets. If you’re someone that feels as though being an Accredited Pet Sitter will benefit you further, go ahead and check it out.

What’s one piece of advice you would give to budding Pet Sitters out there?

Starting off is challenging. You are trying to get your name out there and trying to get your first client.

I found it difficult to get business at first. But do not give up, once you get your first client everything will go uphill from there. Pet owners will start knowing you and your name will get out there real soon.

Finally, just be yourself and be confident in your abilities.

As a Pet Sitter it is your responsibility to create a peaceful environment for them to come and stay at, and kicking the stay off in the right way will put your in good stead to building rapport with your furry guest.

Top Tips for Creating a Peaceful Home

  1. YouTube is a great source for classical music but be sure to choose the right type. Wind instrument music such as Pachelbel’s Canon in D (steer clear of percussion music that contains drums)
  2. Plug in wall adaptors that contain synthetic pheromone scents such as Adaptil for dogs or Feliway for cats
  3. Get any young children present to speak softly and make them aware that a pet is feeling scared/worried.
  4. Give them some treats such as fresh cheese or cooked chicken breast as you slowly talk to them and pat them
  5. Separate any other pets in the house and keep them away for at least an hour
  6. Take them for a tour throughout the house and backyard and let them sniff and toilet outside if they need.
  7. Ensure the Owner provides toys or a bed that is familiar smelling and meaty bones to chew (for dogs)

  3. Ensure the temperature at home is comfortable and turn on fans, aircon, or warmth to adjust if necessary.

Like many of us, your New Years resolution may include being happier and healthier, but for some it may even include welcoming a furry addition to the family.

You can smash all three of these goals with one adorable ball of floof, plus with the added bonus of saving a life.

2018 is a fitting time to welcome a new canine family member, as according to the Chinese Lunar calendar, it’s the Year of the Dog.

TOP 10 REASONS TO ADOPT IN 2018

INSTANT UNCONDITIONAL LOVE

As well as experiencing the unbelievable joy of adopting a dog, they will also love you more than ever.

Even your closest family and friends can get sick of you occasionally, but not your pooch. Always there to greet you with a wagging tail and happy bark, they will adore you.

YOU’LL SAVE A LIFE

Adopting from a shelter or rescue group means you’re not only are you changing the life of the dog you adopt but you’re also clearing up space for another animal in need.

YOU’LL NEVER BE LONELY

Dogs are highly social animals and want to hang out with their human.

You may only be reading a book, watching TV or working on your computer but your fur baby will want to be curled up next to you or sitting at your feet.

The RSPCA reports those who own pet report less depression and appear to cope with grief, stress and loneliness than non-pet owners.

IT’S GOOD FOR YOUR HEALTH

Studies have shown there are a multitude of health benefits for dog owners from lower blood pressure to increased physical activity.

The RSPCA reports pet owners have fewer visits to the doctor and children who grow up with a dog during infancy may have a strengthen immune system and reduced risk of allergies.

NO ALARM CLOCK NEEDED

Your pooch will give you a friendly reminder when nature or breakfast is calling with a lick on the head, paw on your chest or panting in your ear.

YOU’LL BE MORE SOCIAL

Walk time for your pooch is particularly social time for you and your pet.

They will want to greet passing people and other dogs, and they make for a great conversation.

Doggy day care, playdates or trips to the dog park are all changes for you and your dog to be social.

They may even help you make a few new human friends along the way.

YOU’LL LAUGH MORE

Every pooch has it’s own personality and quirks, many of which will have you giggling.

It may be when they get the zoomies, failing to catch a tennis ball or playing hide and seek.

But sometimes it’s just having them around, as the RSPCA reports just the presence of our pets can lift our spirits and help us relax.

YOU WON’T HAVE AN EXCUSE TO STAY INSIDE

Your dog need to go out at least a few time a day which means you’ll reap the benefits, such as reducing stress, making you sleep better and lowering anxiety.

Harvard Health also reports your concentration may improve, you may heal faster, you’ll get more exercise and you’ll likelier be happier.

Especially if you take your dog or walks instead of letting them run around the yard on their own.

YOU’LL UP YOUR SELFIE GAME
Your friends may be tired of seeing just your face, but they will never get sick of seeing a grinning dog with their tongue hanging out.

Your fur baby may even be so popular they will need their own Instagram.

FEELING GOOD ABOUT YOURSELF

For totally selfish reasons, you will feel a great sense of pride for saving a dog and for helping reduce the homeless pet population. You will be rewarded with snuggles, handshakes and looks of adoration.

Now head to your local RSPCA or rescue group and change your life today! Adopt, don’t shop.

Dogs can bark for a number of different reasons and it’s important to figure why so that you effectively stop problem barking and can have a better relationship with your dog – and your neighbours…

Firstly, you need to figure out WHY they are barking.  Is it boredom? Do they have pent up energy?  Are they calling out to other dogs?  Do they smell danger (like smoke?)  Are they lonely?  Are they scared?  Are they being territorial?  Depending on the breed of dog you own will determine different levels of activity each day and types of stimulation to stay mentally occupied, so let’s explore things you can try to stop a dog barking.

Barking Dog Solutions

1. Desensitization

Desensitization is a technique of exposing a dog to a stimulus (also known as a ‘trigger’) that would normally cause a reaction (barking) at an extremely low level.  As the pet becomes less reactive, it is desensitized through exposure to gradually more intense levels of the stimulus, until eventually they no longer react with barking anymore.

For example, if your dog reacts to the sound of car keys being picked up from the bench just before you leave and this would normally cause a reaction (barking).

via GIPHY

  1. Try picking up the keys and then going no where.
  2. Then try picking up the keys very quietly so that they just hear it.
  3. Reward them with a high value treat and some praise if there is no reaction.
  4. Gradually increase the sound and reward them with a treat and some praise if there is no reaction.
  5. Gradually increase the sound again and reward them with a treat and some praise if there is no reaction.

If you get a reaction, don’t reward them, but just start again with a lower level of noise.

2. Create a Visual Barrier

Dogs who are acting territorial about their yard may see or hear other dogs, which may be triggering them to bark.  Blocking out gaps between fence palings is worth trying using a roll of Bamboo screening from Bunnings you can secure to the fence using a thin roll of fencing wire and wire cutters. If you dont have that, or can’t afford it, try cardboard secured to the fence temporarily using plastic cable ties.

You want a fence with no gaps like the image on the left.  Not one they can poke their nose through, like the image on the right.

Signs your Dog might be bored

Two of the most common signs of boredom in a dog are Destruction (they are tearing the place apart) or? Barking (the dog is not engaging with their environment).

If a dog is in good health and is sleeping more than usual they may be bored, but if they are tearing apart the couch, excessively barking or even humping objects, they are definitely bored.  The RSPCA advises both inside and outside dogs can be prone to boredom, even if they have a big yard.

“For many confident dogs, time outside the yard provides much needed mental stimulation (a variety of sights, smells and sounds); even dogs in the biggest yards can become bored if not taken out regularly,” RSPCA said.  Whichever behaviour your dog displays to express their boredom it is important to redirect their negative behaviours rather than punishing them.

3. Book them into a Regular Program of Dog Walks

One of the ways to combat a bored dog involves their favourite four letter word, W-A-L-K.  If you are short of time, booking into a program of weekly dog walks with a professional dog walker is one of the easiest ways to combat their boredom. A dog should be taken for a walk at least once a day. High energy breed dogs such as Airedale Terriers need to be taken for a walk for 2 hours every day for example.

“Dogs, like all of us, need exercise to stimulate their minds and it also takes away the boredom of hanging around in the yard all day,” he said.  If you don’t have the time to exercise your dog, then book a dog walker.  Dog’s brains operate like ours when it comes to exercise and happiness. The endorphines and serotonin produced from exercise will make them happier and their muscles, relaxed.

4. Try out a regular program of Doggy Day Care

If you work during the day and you have an anxious or lonely dog, then booking them into a regular weekly program of Doggy day care is a fantastic way to give your dog social interaction with other dogs in low volume and can help reduce separation anxiety and loneliness and problem barking.

As well as keeping your dog entertained, it can improve their social skills and adaptability.  Your dog’s need for regular socialisation just as important as humans.

5. Start Reward based Training

Positive reinforcement training is a great way to physically and mentally stimulate a dog.  Jordan recommends giving your dog some basic training each and every day for about 10 minutes because dogs, like children, need education.

via GIPHY

“Every interaction with your dog is an opportunity to train you dog,” he said.  “Some helpful and easy commands to consider ae name recognition, sit, drop, come, shake, leave and mat training.”

6. Provide Toys they have to work for

Dogs at home alone need to be kept mentally active.  Enrichment toys and activities are involve a dog having to manipulate or move an object and can be done without interact with a person.  The RSPCA recommends kong’s are enjoyed by most dogs and provide a challenge and good chewing experience.  “It is important to rotate the toys on a regular basis so that your dog does not become bored,” the RSPCA said.  Why not have a toy box and switch up which toys your dog as access to each day.

7. Throw away their food bowl

Dogs are natural scavengers so rather than serving food in a bowl keep a dog entertained with a foraging activity will teach them to work for their food.   Whether food is hidden in kibble treat balls or rubber kongs, frozen in an ice block or hidden around the yard/house this will stimulate your dog to get to their food and give them a tasty snack.  You can purchase toys that will release the food on a timer or they have to push are to release food, or make your own toys with plastic bottles or boxes.   Try scattering your dog’s chews across the lawn. It’s going to take a bit of time to find breakfast, and they will most likely keep looking and not begin barking.

Try a rubber kong stuffed with 100% nuts peanut butter.

RSPCA School for Dogs recommends using food to entertain an easy way to make at home enrichment toys with food.  “Take some old rags or towels (that you don’t mind being ripped or dirtied), tie together into large knots and place dry treats inside the knots”.

8. Try Snuffle Mats

You can make these at home with a bath mat and polar fleece from a material store such as Spotlight. Cut the polar fleece into strips. Then thread them throught the holes in the bathmat and tie to secure, making a messy mat. Sprinkle treats throughout that they have to snuffle with their nose for.

9. Try a Kong Wobbler

Treats are inside and they have to paw at the wobbler to try and tip it over so they fall out of the hole.

via GIPHY

10 . Try a Kibble Ball

Kibble is placed inside a ball with a hole. Your dog has to nose the ball to get the kibble to come out.

11. Try Puzzle Toys

You can make your own DIY puzzle toy using treats hidden under balls in a muffin tin.

12. Try Nose work & scent games

A dog’s sense of smell is more than 10,000 times more powerful than our own. Nose work games can help your dog hone in on their natural talents, and it’s a easy way to keep them entertained.

via GIPHY

13 . Try Raw Meaty Bones

Meaty raw beef bones are great for keeping dogs teeth clean, but also great for keeping them occupied.

9. Seek Vet Advice

If you have tried all these options, we recommend being proactive and seeking Vet Advice as they might recommend some alternate options.

Zylkene (made by Vetoquinol) is a capsule taken orally by pets and is an all-natural, non-sedating, drug-free nutritional supplement that can help to decrease anxiety in both dogs and cats. The active ingredient in Zylkene is alpha-casozepine which is derived from a protein in milk called casein.  You are able to pick up Zylkene from any Vet.

Zylkene all-natural, non-sedating, drug-free nutritional supplement that can help to decrease anxiety.

Complete Calm (made by Blackmores) are kangaroo based chews that contains Tryptophan, B group vitamins and a blend of multivitamins and nutrients to support the general health and nervous function in dogs.  You are able to pick up Complete Calm from most Vet.

Anxiety Aid make by Rufus & Coco is a dietary supplement for dogs and cats that aids in relieving anxiety which you can add to your pet’s food.  Anxiety Aid is a professionally formulated palatable powder to help relieve anxiety in cats and dogs. It contains Tryptophan, an essential amino acid which converts to serotonin once consumed; along with other B group vitamins and minerals.

Medication under Vet Advice

In extreme cases when other non-medicinal methods have been exhausted, you may find that drug therapy may be your only solution. As this solution comes from your vets expert guidance, you should try not to feel guilty about using them, knowing that your vet always has your pet’s best interests at heart.

Vets may prescribe drugs, which tend to calm a dog’s senses a little, but they are not a cure. Drugs only provide a support mechanism to assist the owner in rehabilitating the dog, it is only a temporary fix for the underlying problem. You have to treat the root cause.

What do you think of when you hear “self-care”? Like many of us you may think of a mani-pedi, bubbles baths or a new hairdo.

While these are great ways to take time out for yourself let’s explore how to take care of the most important asset in your pet sitting business, YOU!

It is important to take care of yourself when you aren’t working because as a pet sitter a pet owner is placing their beloved pet in your hands and trusting you to be a reliable and responsible carer while they are away.

You probably understand the importance of taking time for yourself, but are you doing it?

Petbarn

CARING FOR YOURSELF SO YOU CAN CARE FOR OTHERS

Aside from the fluffy aspects of self-care, which we love too, here are some self-care tips you may not know:

  • Getting rid of the excuse, reason or story that is holding you back in life and business
  • Exercising every day: whether it’s the gym, team sports, dancing, walking a dog, or something else exercising has a range of mental and physical benefits including boosting your energy levels, making you feel happier and helping your brain health and memory.
  • Eating healthy: treat yourself to good food, you’re worth it.
  • You are the equal of the 5 people you spend time with the most, so surround yourself with positive, loving and supportive people. Distance yourself from those who aren’t.
  • Forgive yourself for past mistakes and learn from them so you can grow and move forward in you life/business.
  • Reading mindset/self-help books, and actually following through with the expert’s advice
  • Don’t just go through the motions. Make a decision every day to be present in your life and business.
  • If you are having any issues or dealing with past trauma it is ok to need help. Seek a counsellor for a chat.
  • Acknowledge when you need to change something and/or get rid of something in your life/business that is no longer helping you personally or as a pet sitter.

Working as a pet sitter or house sitter is an amazing job, but like any job, has its challenges which may require you to be resourceful and adaptable.

As a pet sitter you may often work long hours while managing your clients and their pet’s needs but thankfully with PetCloud you aren’t alone in managing and maintaining your business.

But on top of the feeding, watering, walking, meet and greet, replying to clients and applying for jobs you need to make time for YOU!

Having a work-life balance is so important in any job, so don’t put your health and wellbeing on the back-burner, because how can you provide the best care to pets if you aren’t looking after yourself.
SELF CARE NEEDED! COMMON WARNINGS SIGNS

This is a great time of year to reevelatue your life and business.

  • Negative thoughts about your business (constant, not just here-and-there)
  • Binge eating/drinking

HISTORY

As its name suggests the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel has a regal history as a favourite lap dog of kings and princes. Vastly popular in recent times they are not just passing fad, having a long history, existing in the 16th and 17th centuries.

PERSONALITY TRAITS AND BEHAVIOUR

Family: An indoor dog who loves, and needs, to be a part of the family. Ideal for all ages, for families and the elderly. Housedogs who are attached to their people and should not live outdoors.
Read more on “How long can you leave your dog alone?”

Personality: A dependant personality who love to be with people and shouldn’t be left alone for long periods of time. Consider doggy day care during the working week or pet sitting when away for holidays.

Temperament: Happy, friendly, non-aggressive. Generally has no tendency to nervousness.

Trainability: Eager to please and wonderfully simple to train. Intelligent and willing to try whatever you’d like them to do. Food rewards and positive reinforcement ensure smooth training process.

Cavaliers, like many toy breeds, can have issues with housetraining. Keep them on a consistent schedule, with plenty of opportunities to go to the toilet outdoors they can become trustworthy in the home.

Sociability (other pets): Social butterfly that is excellent with other dogs and pets. A spaniel at heart, he may try to chase birds, rabbits and other small prey.

Barking: Medium tendency; may bark when someone comes to the door but because of their friendly nature, they aren’t good guard dogs.

Petbarn

GROOMING

Grooming Needs: At least a good brush once a week to avoid matting and a bath as required.

Coat Type: Long, silky and free from curls but with a light wave and plenty of feathering.

Moulting: Mild.

HEALTH AND PHYSICAL NEEDS

Exercise Needs: A relaxed breed who are happy to lounge around, but if kept fit are capable of going for long walks. Daily walking is recommended to keep fit and healthy, as well as some playtime.

Enrichment toys, activities, and training is great to keep healthy and stimulated.

Diet: A sweet expression that holds the power to extract unlimited supplies of food from people under their spell and not surprisingly can easily become overweight by being spoilt.

1/2 to 1 cup of high quality food a day, divided into two meals. This is a guide and how much your dog eats depends on their size, age, build, metabolism, and activity level. Dogs are individuals, just like people, and they don’t all need the same amount of food.

Average Life Span:  9 – 15 years

Special Considerations: Breeding stock should be specialist tested for clear heart and eyes.

To get a healthy dog, never buy a puppy from an irresponsible breeder, puppy mill or pet store. Why not adopt from your local RSPCA.

.

TALENTS

Thought Cavaliers love to lounge this pooch can be quite sporty and do well in obedience and agility trials.
